Tom Dumoulin Wins World Championship Individual Time Trial

Team Sunweb (Norway) – In an amazing performance, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin won the individual time trial title in style. He completed the 31km course in Bergen in 44 minutes and 41 seconds to beat his nearest rival (Slovenian Primoz Roglic, from Team Lotto Jumbo) by a convincing 57 seconds. Great Britain’s Chris Froome from Team Sky took home the bronze, 1 minute and 21 seconds back. This victory marks Team Sunweb’s third world title earned so far at the 2017 World Championships.

“This year’s World Championship Time-Trial featured an added tactical element, as the riders had to decide if they would swap onto a road bike at the foot of the 3.4km finishing climb, Mount Fløyen. Eventual winner Tom opted to remain on his Giant Trinity for the duration of the course, which paid off as he won the event by a huge margin. Tom, who was a key part of the team time trial winning squad, was the penultimate rider to leave the start ramp. Shortly after beginning his battle against the clock the rain started to fall, making it even more difficult on such a technical course”, explained Team Sunweb.

“Despite having to take it easy on the corners, Tom immediately reminded why he was the favourite as he smashed the intermediate time splits set by previous riders. Mount Fløyen was the decisive element of the course, proving to be the undoing of some riders. Tom excelled on the climb, calmly powering to the top to take the world time trial title. This stunning victory takes Team Sunweb’s haul to three world titles so far in these championships”, they added.

"After success in the Team Time Trial, Wilco Kelderman put in a stunning solo performance to stop the clock in 46’15”. Wilco maintained a well-measured pace throughout, then gave it everything on Mount Fløyen which put him in the top spot at the time. Representing his home nation of Germany, Nikias Ardnt put in a storming ride to move into second position. Although he was one of the earlier starters, with such a strong time he was able to hold onto the second spot for a long time, until the race favourites took to the course", concluded Team Sunweb.

Reactions:
Tom was ecstatic after taking the win, he said “I can’t believe it, it’s really amazing! I thought my power meter was off because it was so high. I felt really, really good. After it started raining I had to take the corners really slow, especially in the first kilometre of the climb with all the twists and turns, every corner my back wheel was slipping because I had my TT tyres on, as I thought it would stay dry.

He added “I chose not to take the risk swapping bikes. I think I’m one of the guys who can do a really good climb on the TT bike and have no problems handling it, so I think it was the right decision. Doing the double is amazing. Last Sunday it was a bit of a surprise that we won with the team, it was an amazing day. I think today is less surprising – I was one of the favourites, but in some ways that makes it harder.”
