Stéphane Tempier and Sabrina Enaux shine for France

Roc d'Azur (France) - Sunday’s summary.

The last day of the 35th edition of Roc d’Azur was a perfect day for the French clan. In the elite races, Stéphane Tempier and Sabrina Enaux won at the Nature Base in Fréjus (Var).

A final bow on the finish line to thank audiences and bask in the moment. At the age of 32, the French rider won his second Roc d’Azur this Sunday following his victory in 2012. After riding 52 km of trails in the Massif des Maures, he came in ahead of his two compatriots, Victor Koretzky and Jordan Sarrou, who won back in 2014 and 2016 and will now have to wait a bit longer to equal the record of three victories on the Roc (Miguel Martinez in 1997, 2004 and 2013).

In a lacklustre season, despite a good start (2nd in the World Cup in Albstadt, Germany in May), 11th in this year’s World Championships, Tempier was out ahead early in the race. “I did a good downhill in the Fournel and initially managed to break away on the steep climb that follows,” says the former junior world silver medal winner (2004).” I saw that I was creating a gap and that I should give it a try. I knew that I had no chance in the sprint against Victor and Jordan, so I gave all I’ve got to protect my lead. I came out of the summer frustrated, so although you always come here to have fun and enjoy yourself, I nevertheless decided to prepare well for the race. Finishing off the season like this is fantastic.” The Roc d’Azur was the last stage on the Roc Trophy, and confirmed the domination of Poland’s Piotr Brzozka, with the fastest cumulated time from the Canyon Roc Marathon (83 km, Friday), the 40.5 km race on the Saturday and the Roc d’Azur (52 km, Sunday).

A first for Sabrina Enaux:

In the Roc d’Azur women’s race, Sabrina Enaux finally managed to savour the final straight, raise her arms and tip her bike skywards before being welcomed by her small daughter, Léonine. Often on the podium, as her second place last year demonstrates, the 40-year-old French rider took the win this time, following Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, last year’s winner. “It was a bit of a surprise because I’d come without any major aspirations, just to enjoy myself,” says the rider from the Vosges, bronze medal winner in the MTB Marathon world Championships. “I had a big gap after the world Championships this summer and have only been more or less on form for about a week. Today, I spent much of the race alone holding back. I was a bit lost in the mud, and in my thoughts. Then I got it together and took the lead in the Col de Bourgnon and kept it. I’ve never won here before even in the junior categories so of course I’m delighted.” She came in ahead of Slovenia’s, Tanja Zakelj, ranked 17th in the world, and the French rider Léna Gérault, who took third spot on the podium as she did in 2017.
