Team Sunweb (United Arab Emirates) – On the last opportunity for the sprinters at the Abu Dhabi Tour, Team Sunweb executed their tactical plan to perfection leading German sprinter Phil Bauhaus out to take the stage 3 victory in an incredibly close photo finish.
The day opened with a four rider breakaway clipping ahead of the bunch, eventually being brought back with 50 kilometres still to race. The bunch remained in tact for the remainder of the race, with Team Sunweb bringing Tom Dumoulin to safety and then later, sprinter Phil Bauhaus into position for the fast dash to the line. After a solid lead-out, Phil Bauhaus sprinted to a spectacular victory, taking the win in a photo finish.
Reactions:
Speaking of the win, Phil said: “We have a really good team here for the sprint and I’ve been working well at home. My goal here was to go for a podium or take a win, so it’s really nice to be able to achieve that against such a super strong field. It’s always hard to get the first win of the season and get the ball rolling, especially after such an unlucky day here yesterday. I hope we can continue like this into tomorrow and Sunday where we have a lot of cards to play.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek added: “We can be really proud of what we’ve achieved today after the bad luck yesterday. Every day we have got better and better with the lead-out and the win is well deserved. We had a plan, stuck to it and it paid off. It was a really strong team performance and a great boost of confidence for the upcoming stages.”
