Transpyr Coast to Coast starts to reveal details about the stages’ timed sections

On May 24, 2018

Transpyr Gran Raid MTB (Spain) – A pioneering format that interlaces liaison sections with timed sections, giving free rein to the riders’ competitive spirit while allowing them to enjoy the company and the Pyrenees’ fabulous landscape.

Transpyr C2C has started to reveal details about one of the main changes in the event’s ninth edition, which is due to take place from 10-16 June: timed sections. There will be one or two per stage, which will consist of intermediary stretches that make up the competitive nucleus of the race, the aim of which is to unite two seas in seven days. The sections are between 20 and 30 kilometres long, during which time the riders will be timed. Participants will have the chance to keep track of their overall position in the standings of each stage and the entire race.

With a view to offering the cyclists variety and fresh incentive, the organisers have prepared some highly diverse timed sections. These stretches have an average elevation gain of 600 metres and alternate gruelling climbs with fast, technically-challenging descents. The location of the sections also varies, with some taking place near the start, and others falling in the middle or towards the end of the route.

The timed sections are just another way of approaching this prestigious event, which proposes one single mission and many means of achieving it. With 100-kilometre-plus stages each day, the blend of liaisons and timed sections will enable racers to enjoy the Pyrenees’ changing scenery and the international company of participants without missing out on the excitement and intensity of testing their mettle along competitive stretches.

This idea was posed in response to concerns raised by numerous participants, particularly those coming from far away, who complained that the intensity and concentration the stages require make it impossible to enjoy the stunning surroundings or the international atmosphere that makes this stage-race so unique. Following last year’s trail run, this innovative proposal has been given the thumbs up by cyclists from around the world. At the same time, Transpyr Coast to Coast was once again included among the world’s top ten MTB stage-races by the magazine National Geographic.

In addition to the classic formula of tackling the challenge of Transpyr Coast to Coast in twoperson teams or individually, riders also have the option to complete it in relay teams or on an electric bike, as part of the so-called E-Transpyr C2C. And lest Transpyr forget the road bike equivalent, TRANSPYR Backroads, for those who prefer to cycle the extraordinary southern face of the Pyrenees on quiet, unknown secondary roads. This event is, without doubt, one of the most highly esteemed among real road cyclists.
