Santini supplied 600 Jerseys for the 2017 Edition of Giro d’Italia
Santini (Italy) – 2017 Giro D’Italia: A Caravan Of 600 Santini Jerseys as the Ciclamino returns in style.

Santini has been designing and making the prestigious Giro d’Italia jerseys since 1993. Once again this year, Santini will be dressing the classification leaders drawing on our extensive experience in technical cycling clothing. Also for this Centenary edition of the Giro, the traditional Maglia Ciclamino makes a welcome return for the points leader.

Monica Santini: "We supply 600 garments for the Giro d’Italia to cover all imaginable sizes to cater for all four leaders at the end of each stage".

Friday, May 5, was a historic date for Alghero when the Sardinian city plays host to the start of the Centenary Edition of the Giro d’Italia. The eyes of the road cycling world will be on it and the Italian classic which is one of the highlights of the 2017 road race calendar.

For over two decades, Bergamo-based Santini Cycling Wear has been official supplier of the Giro d’Italia’s four jerseys: pink, white, blue and (the now-revived) cyclamen.

A total of 600 jerseys and skinsuits in all sizes will be made for the Giro d’Italia to ensure that all necessities are covered and to suit the specific requirements of all the riders. That said, the majority of the cyclists competing take smaller sizes. "It’s quite unusual for the athletes to take anything larger than M, sizewise, and most will take S or XS or, in certain cases, even XXS," commented Santini CEO Monica Santini . "We also supply rainproof jackets, aerodynamic skinsuits for the time trials, and all the accessories that the leader of all the various classifications will require."

The most instantly-recognisable of the leader jerseys is, of course, the Maglia Rosa sponsored by Enel which is worn by the race leader. It is pink in homage to the colour of the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, one of the journalistic mainstays of Italian cycling. Flanking it are the blue Maglia Azzurra, sponsored by Mediolanum, which is donned by the cyclist topping the Mountains Classification, and the white Euro Spin-sponsored Maglia Bianca which goes to the best young rider in the race.

The Maglia Ciclamino for the points leader makes a welcome return for the Centenary edition after doing service between 1970 and 2009. Before 1970 and between 2010 and 2016, the jersey for this particular classification was red. Italy’s leading espresso coffee maker, Segafredo Zanetti, is the sponsor.

The iconic Maglia Rosa and the three other leader jerseys for the individual classifications will also be flanked by a capsule collection dedicated to the four milestone stages of this 2017 edition and, of course, the legendary black Maglia Nera. Each jersey symbolises the history of the place or characters it is devoted to. Coordinating shorts, cap, socks and gloves are also available for each of the jerseys in the same colours and graphics. The special jerseys pay homage to stages that traverse Sardinia, the island on which the Giro starts, the 16th stage through the Apennines which is dedicated to Bartali, the Rovetta-Bormio stage with the Stelvio climb which is this year’s “Cima Coppi” (“Coppi Peak”), and the final stage which from the Monza Auto Racing Circuit to Milan’s Duomo. The black Maglia Nera completes Santini’s Giro d’Italia capsule collection. It references the legend of the Maglia Nera awarded between 1946 and 1951 to the lowest ranked cyclist in the classification. Ironically, the black jersey was greatly coveted, with competitors even going so far as to puncture their own tyres to win it.

The capsule collection and 2017 Giro d’Italia replica leader jerseys are available from leading cycling stores and on Santini's website.
