Magura launched the New HSi Hydraulic Rim Brakes with Integrated Design
Magura (Germany) – "HSi - As the first hydraulic rim brake, the MAGURA HS revolutionized cycling 30 years ago. Over the years the HS-brake won numerous tests for its reliability and braking power. Nowadays the HS is a synonym for robust, stress-free and safe braking on bicycles. Even the rise of disc brakes for bicycles didn’t stop the success at all", stated Magura.

The trust of dealers and customers in the HS33 R, HS22 and HS11 brakes motivated the MAGURA developers to use the HS series as the foundation for a new project.

In a cooperation with bicycle manufacturer ZEG and suspension producer SR SUNTOUR the engineers and designers developed for the first time an in fork and frame integrated version of the MAGURA HS. ZEG is going to mount the brake on both, E- and regular bikes of their brands Hercules, Pegasus and Wanderer.

According to Magura, "Goal of the integration project was besides the exciting new way of design, the improvement of several spots":
  • Easy handling during wheel change
  • Easy brake pad replacement
  • Improved stiffness, therefore more braking power, especially on the back wheel
  • Easy service and maintenance for bike shops and industry
  • Integrated design

Interview with MAGURA product manager Martin Schneider:

Which model was used as the foundation for the HS integral?

ZEG decided to use the HS22, but the HSi works with every master, if there is need to change.

How complicated was it to integrate the brake into frame and fork?

It was actually quite complex. The development took 1½ years without the design process. The success is based on the close partnership between all three companies.

Is the HS integral equipped fork by SR Suntour going to be available for other brands too?

In its first year the brakes and the fork are exclusively delivered to ZEG. From 2019 on the system including fork and brakes is going to be available for other brands too.

Which benefits does the rider have?

On the one hand side the brake is visually integrated into the bike, on the other hand side we were able to increase the overall performance of the brake. The increased stiffness results in a more defined pressure point. Due to that the braking distance shrinks and safety while riding increases.

What’s the difference between a regular HS brake and the HSi?

The entire mounting on fork and frame got redesigned, now the fixation doesn’t require the “canti-bolt” anymore, it works easily through a clamp.

Have you been able to save some weight with that?

Yes, 50g per brake less (For example the HS22 currently weights 440g, the HS22i only 390g)

How did the handling for the costumer change – or got improved?

The quick-release skewer got an update and therefore got ergonomically a lot more comfortable. You’ll also need less strength to open it now.

Are the HS spare parts usable on the HSi?

All the components except the HSi mounting parts remain the same, so you can use all common spare parts.

Where do I get spare parts?

Either through us or ZEG directly.

What do you need to check when you mount to brake?

Like with all of the other HS brakes it’s important that the quick-release skewer is closed in an orderly fashion and that the brake pads are in the right position to the rim.

How did you achieve the clearly increased pressure point on the back wheel?

Due to the construction of the new HSi brake, the frame got 2,5 cm closer to the actual brake, than it usually is on the regular HS brakes. You can see that visually, plus you can obviously feel it while pulling the lever.

What kind of adjustment possibilities does the HSi have?

With the MAGURA HS22i you can adjust the brake pads once they start wearing out, besides that the lever is adjustable in three positions.

Are there different kind of brake pads?

Depending on usage and wishes by the rider, all of the HS brake pads can be used. Off the shelf the brakes will be equipped with the black standard pads.
