2017 Ironman World Championship to be Broadcast on Red Bull TV
Red Bull (USA) – Direct from Hawai’i and available on all devices, global debut will deliver over 10 hours of coverage, including unique insider views of the most prestigious one-day endurance event in all of sports.

For the first time, Red Bull TV will broadcast the IRONMAN® World Championship from Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i with free coverage live and on demand. Hosted by legendary IRONMAN® World Champion and Grand Slam of Triathlon winner Greg Welch (AUS) and multiple IRONMAN® Champion Michael Lovato (USA), and featuring field reporters “Big Matt” Lieto (USA) and Charlie Webster (GBR), the IRONMAN® World Championship on Red Bull TV will reveal the race as it’s never been seen before. New camera angles, aerial imagery and four 30-minute Facebook Live feeds from varied points on the course put viewers in the heart of the action, while behind-the scenes stories will draw them even closer to the endurance stars [chasing the crown/gutting it out] on the Hawai`i Big Island’s lava bedsfields.

The IRONMAN® World Championship is one the most iconic events in the history of endurance racing. A holy grail for triathletes, for over three decades the IRONMAN® World Championship has challenged the sport’s elite with a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile marathon. The setting with black lava rock is not only spectacular, but also spectacularly difficult, with relentless sun and temperatures of 82 to 95°F combining with crosswinds that can gust to 60mph. The event has drawn standouts from 117 countries, regions and territories to date and includes race classes for able-bodied and physically challenged participants. This year’s championship-hungry pros and roughly 2,400 qualified age-group contenders will be cheered by thousands lining the finish on Ali’i Drive.

All season long, the very best in the sport train specifically toward the IRONMAN World Championship, and in the 2017 edition, Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf is again one to watch. The two-time defending women’s IRONMAN® World Champion and course record holder is fresh off a September victory at the IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship in Chattanooga. In Hawai`’i’s opening leg, all eyes will be on 24-year-old Lucy Charles of Great Britain. One of the youngest women in the field, Charles is expected to be the strongest swimmer, based on her results in the “Big Swim Kona” event, where she topped even her male opponents to become the first womanever to take the overall win.

And when it comes to the men, 2014 IRONMAN® World Champion Sebastian Kienle is picked as one of the favorites – the German is especially feared for his iron will and prowess on the bike. Challenging to retain his thrown is back-back IRONMAN World Champion Jan Frodeno. Frodeno is the 2008 Olympic gold medalist and also holds a IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship title putting him in an elite group of triathletes. Meanwhile American Jesse Thomas may have the kick to overtake in the last leg, the former collegiate runner has left life as a startup founder in Silicon Valley to fully dedicate himself to triathlon. IRONMAN® New Zealand Champion Braden Currie is a powerhouse whose full potential is still unknown: he’s making his IRONMAN® World Championship debut after winning September’s IRONMAN 70.3 event in Santa Cruz against the likes of seven-time IRONMAN 70.3 champion Ben Hoffman.

Other fascinating stories that will unfold include those of Louisiana’s Hamburg, Germany’s Spencer HollanderPaul Lennart, who at 20 18 years of age is the youngest competitor in this year’s event; Hiromu Inada, who at 84 is the oldest athlete in the field and looking to break his own 2016 record as the oldest athlete ever to complete the IRONMAN® World Championship; and Sweden’s Aron Anderson, a paralyzed athlete who won the 2017 Wings for Life World Run endurance event by covering 57.25 miles in an everyday wheelchair.
